About My Geese

Many years ago, I started my geese out from six babies – a pair of African, a pair of Grey Saddle, and a pair of Pomeranian. I currently have 14 in the flock (gaggle is the correct word) but I’ve had as many as 26 at one time. Five of them were hatched from geese sitting on the nest. These were raised by the geese themselves. The rest of the geese beyond the initial six were all raised from eggs, hatched in an incubator. These were raised in the house for a few weeks and then on the back porch in boxes until they were old enough to join the others. Captive geese can live for 25 years.

I like having a flock geese. It’s kind of like having a pack of dogs. Often they will gather around the large door of the forge shop and watch me work. They also like listening to music. They have flock behaviors as well as individual personalities. Some are friendly, or at least tolerant, and some are down right tempermental. Even my dogs know to stay clear of them. But they are a lot of fun to watch and interact with. If they get access to come into the shop or on the back patio, they will trash the place – like a bunch of spring break kids at a drunken pool party! We also raise chickens and ducks, but the geese are just my favorite homestead animals.

Why "Tempered Goose" In The Forge Name?

There’s something magical about stepping into my backyard each day to be greeted by the honking of my geese. What started as a venture into homesteading has become one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. During my childhood my dad also raised geese. So I have been around them a lot and know their sounds, habbits, and reactions.

Geese are social animals that form unique bonds with each other and their caretakers. Their strong personalities and vocal nature make them endearing companions. A few times every day they will have a call to flight. One of the leaders will begin a certain sharp call, the others will gather and answer, then all of them will run some distance as a group with neck straight forward and wings out.

Watching them interact with each other and their environment provides endless entertainment and joy. Whether it’s their playful antics or their temperamental behaviors, geese bring a delightful presence to my homestead.

I am known for raising Geese and Forging. Geese are temperamental. Steel blades are hardened and then tempered. The tempering of the steel is an important part of the process.

So “Tempered Goose Forge” was melded into the name from two things that are such a part of my life.
