The Forge
The blacksmithing process involves several key steps:
- **Heating:** Metal is heated in a forge until it reaches a glowing red or yellow state. The color is directly related to the temperature of the steel itself.
- **Shaping:** Using hammers, anvils, and other tools, the blacksmith shapes the heated metal into the desired form.
- **Quenching and Tempering:** To enhance the steel’s strength and durability, it may be quenched (rapidly cooled) and tempered (reheated to a specific temperature for a specific time).
- **Finishing:** Finally, the piece is finished through grinding, polishing, or patination to enhance its aesthetic appeal. A coat of oil or wax is then applied to protect and preserve the metal.
Custom Built Forge
I have built most everything in my forge from scratch, to include the forge equipment itself, the 2 x 72 belt grinder as well as several attachments for it, the anvil stand, and many of my work tools such as hammers, tongs, and hardy tools.
